Life on Earth


1. Every week a staggering 10,000 square kilometers of tropical rainforest are cut down. An area the size of France disappears every 12 months.

2.The nations of the world rich and poor a like continue to regard the sea as convenient place to dump millions of tons chemicals,sewage and industrial waste.

3.There are now more than 800 nuclear power stations through-out the world. Although this is supposed to be a ‘clean’ form of energy,there are in fact very high risks associated with it. 

4.Smoke from factories and coalfired power stations not only pollutes the air, but also causes chemical changes in the atmosphere which result in acid rain. 

5. In 1985 it was noticed that there was a hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic. Scientists now belive that the loss of ozone may be as much as 30% and still rising.




6. Over the last 10 years, the Sahara has advenced southwards by an average of 20 kilometers per year and 250 000 square kilometers f land has turned into desert. 



7. A major report on global warming has warned that average world temepratures will rise by several degrees in the next century,due to the build up of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gases’ in the  Earth’s atmosphere.
