Boston is not far from Plymouth Rock, the place where some of the first English settlers landed in December 1620. These were the Pilgrims. About a hundred of them spent eight weeks on small ship, the Mayflower,as they sailed from Plymouth in England to the New World.
When the Pilgrims landed they first built large house from logs and then several cottages. They called their village Plymouth, the name of their old home in England.
That first winter was very hard for the settlers. In the spring they planted wheat and peas. The Indians showed them how to plant a new kind of food, maize. In the autumn the settlers had a good harvest, and in November another English ship came.
